Joanne Gottlieb, age 86, a longtime resident of Cubero, NM and more recently of Roswell, NM, passed away Friday, March 6, 2015 in Roswell. She was born to Arthur and Elsie “Roud” Freas on September 11, 1928 in Cambridge, OH.
Joanne and her parents moved in 1946 to Grants, NM, where she graduated from Grants Union High School in May 1947. She married Hans J. Gottlieb on September 7, 1948 in Grants, and moved to Cubero, NM, where Hans was working and soon became business partners with his brother Kurt. Hans and Joanne retired from being business owners in 1988 and moved to Roswell, NM in the summer of 1994.
Her many activities included being an active member of the Eastern Star in Grants and Roswell, NM, where she served in many positions, including Worthy Matron. She volunteered at Military Heights Elementary School for 18 years in the library department, and served as President of the Roswell Garden Club. Joanne absolutely loved working in the yard and gardening with her husband, Hans, but her happiest times were when she free-hand painted china dishes that are treasured by her entire family. She continued to paint up to her last month on earth.
Preceeding her in death were her parents, Arthur and Elsie Freas and her husband, Hans Gottlieb.
Survived by her four children: Arthur and wife Joyce of Rio Rancho, NM, Richard and wife Diane of Las Cruces, NM, Michael and wife Brenda of Roswell, NM, and Judy Lawson and husband George of Duncan Falls, OH; eight grandchildren: BJ Gottlieb and wife Joy, Misty Gottlieb, LeAnn Jenkins and husband Patrick, Linda Bates and husband Robert, Erin Welsh and husband David, Brandon Gottlieb and wife Kandace, Janis Bodley and husband Jason, and Daniel Elliott and wife Cassandra. Also surviving Joanne are her nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Assumption Catholic Church at 2808 N. Kentucky Ave., Roswell, NM. There will be a luncheon served at the church after the services for friends and family. Interment will be in Grants, NM at Grants Memorial Park at a later date.
