Anna Mary Derrick

DERRICKobiytAnna Mary (Lattion) Derrick was born on May 24, 1921, in Hagerman, New Mexico, to Frank E. Lattion and Rosalie Darioly. Her father’s family moved to New Mexico from Switzerland in about 1894. Frank returned to Switzerland with his mother in 1913 where he married Rosalie. They traveled by the Queen Mary to the United States and set up housekeeping under the Caprock and began their family in the first house in the area with indoor plumbing. The Lattion children were, in order, Micheline (Mickey), Raymond, Eda (Edith), Francis (Frankie), Anna Mary, Gladys and Rose. Their mother passed away during the difficult birth of their eighth child, Geraldine Rosalie, who soon passed away as well as an infant. Anna Mary’s only surviving siblings are Mickey who is 100 years old and lives in Carlsbad, NM and Frankie who is 96 years old and resides in Cliff, NM.

Anna Mary married Curly Derrick on May 31, 1940. She spent her life as a dedicated, hard-working rancher’s wife. She was a dedicated homemaker and mother and as organized a person as you will ever meet. She was preceded in death by her husband Curly in April of 2004.

She is survived by their son Jimmy who was born in 1943 and Donald who was born in 1945. They first lived on the Derrick Ranch east of Hagerman and then purchased a ranch near Mayhill, NM in 1951 where they lived until retirement. Mother worked outside the home at Thomason’s Mercantile in Mayhill for several years prior to working at the Otero County Electric Cooperative in Cloudcroft, NM, where she worked 18 years before retiring. She and Curly also resided in Artesia and Carlsbad after retiring. She was a longtime member of Churches of Christ in Mayhill, Artesia and Carlsbad.

Anna Mary passed from this life on Friday, March 13, 2015 having lived 93 years, 9 months and 13 days. She spent her last days cared for at Good Samaritan, Betty Dare in Alamogordo where her sons Jimmy and Donald visited her several times a week. Her memorial service will be held at Hermosa Drive Church of Christ in Artesia at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 17. Services will be officiated by Matthew Clark, grandson-in-law and minister of the Grants Church of Christ, and Eddy Coleman, minister of the Mayhill Church of Christ. Pallbearers will be Brent Derrick, Ryan Derrick, Chad Merchant, Joel Stewart, Derrick Merchant, Trey Merchant, Jordan Merchant and Keegan Stewart. Honorary pallbearers will be Aiden Derrick, Kolton Derrick, and Malachi Merchant. Services are under direction of Terpening & Sons Mortuary in Artesia.

She is survived by her son Jimmy and wife Maxine of Cloudcroft NM, her son Donald and wife Janet of Mayhill, NM.

She is also survived by five grandchildren: Donell Merchant and husband Chad of Lubbock Texas; Loree Stewart and husband Joel of Grants, NM; Brent Derrick and wife Lily of Pearland, Texas; Ryan Derrick and wife Kelley of Memphis, Tennessee; Jana Clark and husband Matthew of Grants, New Mexico.

She is survived by 13 great-grandchildren: Derrick Merchant and wife Tasha of Lubbock, Texas and Trey Merchant and wife Corie of Lubbock and Jordan Merchant of Lubbock; Kaylee Stewart of Lubbock (LCU), Kami and Keegan Stewart of Grants, NM; Katarina and Aiden Derrick of Pearland, Texas; Ryley and Kolton Derrick of Memphis, TN.; Jadyn, Chloe and Kyler Clark of Grants, NM.

One great-great-grandchild: Malachi Merchant and two expected twin great-great-grandsons, Madden and Britton Merchant.

So you see that Anna Mary has left a legacy and will live on through her influence on this family.

Flowers are optional but an honorarium to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home in Portales are requested to honor Anna Mary.

Beloved husband of Bernadette Przewoznik Seale. Devoted father of Raymond U. Seale, Jr. and Stephanie (Christopher) Olson. Cherished and adoring grandfather of Aaron and Julianne Olson. Dear brother-in-law of Ann (Gary) Jedlowski. Loving uncle of Sheree Wenger, Dan Jedlowski and proud godson, Matt Jedlowski.

Preceded in death by parents, Raymond and Inez Clark Seale, and one brother, Idan Seale. Graduate of Roswell High Class of 1952. Dedicated and proud professor of anatomy at Rush University Medical Center for nearly 30 years. Longtime service in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring as Master Sergeant.

Among Ray’s favorite things were the family dogs and cats, bass and bluegill fishing at the family home in Montello, WI, cheering on the Chicago White Sox, teaching at Rush, and traveling to the Southwest, especially his hometown of Roswell, New Mexico.  He enjoyed a friendly game of cards or chess, listening to his old records, and above all else, seeing his grandchildren.

Services at CENTRAL CHAPEL, 6158 S. Central Ave., Chicago, where family and friends will gather on Monday, March 23, from 2 to 8 p.m., with Funeral Service at 7 p.m. Cremation following.

ZAMORAobitDianna Zamora, 63, passed away on January 20, 2015 in Roswell. Dianna was born on March 24, 1951 to Roy E. Denney and Johnnie Moore in Roswell, NM.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in teaching, she taught school for 25 years in the NM school system. Dianna married Gene Zamora on March 30, 1999 in Carrizozo, NM.

Her passions in life were traveling, sewing, spending time with her family and her dogs: Buddy, Shadow, Wookey and Maggie.

Preceding her in death is a sister, Pamela Sue Denney.

Surviving Dianna is her husband, Gene Zamora; two daughters: Tammy Cunningham (Charles) of Hobbs, NM and Tonya Crabb (Alex) of Iowa; four grandchildren: Chandler Cunningham, Kaylee Cunningham, Michael Crabb and Joseph Crabb; four stepchildren: Gen Zamora (Tracy) of San Angelo, TX, Della Reeves (Jim), Eric Zamora (Frances) and Jennifer Salazar (Danny) all of Roswell, NM. Also surviving her are 18 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 from 4-6 p.m. at Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home Chapel.

NewbyEdgar L. Newby was born on Thursday, July 2, 1914 in Waurika, Oklahoma, the son of Rewel and Effie (Grubbs) Newby. He died on Monday, March 9, 2015 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was 100 years of age.

Edgar married the former Miss Margaret Edwards on September 12, 1934 in Greenville, Texas. He was a minister for the Assemblies of God church until his retirement in 1981. He pastored First Assembly of God in Roswell from 1956 until 1981. He also pastored churches in Seminole and Enid, Oklahoma, Gallup, New Mexico, Levelland and Alvord, Texas. He was on the Southwestern Assemblies of God Board of Regents. He was presently a member of Carbondale Assembly of God Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Edgar was a horseman and a mule skinner. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his sons, Rev. Bill Newby and wife Eunice of Lees Summit, MO and Dr. Ed Newby, Jr. of Lawton, OK.

Grandchildren, Pam and husband Mike Kline of Independence, MO and Christy and husband Steve Poppen of Minneapolis, MN.

Great-grandchildren, Lauren, Brandon, Natalie, Drew, Nathan, and Avery. A sister, Lois Owen of Beaumont, TX and a brother, Paul Newby and wife Jean.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his parents, a sister, Ophelia Flowers, brothers, George Newby, Isaac Newby, and a sister, Faye McQueen.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 15, 2015 in Broken Arrow, OK. The burial is Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lawton, OK.

Bob Halbert Byrd

Bob Halbert Byrd, 89, of Ruidoso, died on March 19, 2015 at his home with his family at his side. He was born on September 7, 1925 in San Angelo, Texas to the home of Homer and Sulena (Halbert) Byrd. Upon graduating from high school Bob joined the Army Air Corp and flew 26 missions over Japan as a gunner. When he was separated from the service he returned home and started a career in cattle and sheep ranching. He loved to fish, golf and to travel.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents and two wives, Betty Windstead Byrd and Dixie Elledge Byrd. He is survived by his sons, Bob Halbert Byrd Jr. and wife Denise of Corona, Michael Byrd of Roswell, stepdaughter, Kim Isaacks and husband David of Ruidoso, stepson, Mark LaMoria of Port LaVaca, daughter-in-law Judy Byrd of Vaughn, his grandchildren, Robbie, Jason and Colin Byrd, Shannon Lightfoot and Candice Roberts, Marc Quist, Nathan Isaacks, Samantha Quist, Adam Isaacks, Trae Quist, and Amanda Isaacks. Also surviving him are six great- grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso. Private entombment will be on Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque.

Carl “Mike” Speegle

Graveside services are scheduled for Carl “Mike” Speegle, 62, on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 1 p.m. at South Park Cemetery with Pastor Timothy Arlet officiating.

Mike was born November 14, 1952 in Murray, Kentucky to Carl Jack and Dolores Taylor Speegle. Mike was a produce manager for 20 years with the Food Lion Grocery chain. After his retirement, Mike lived in Virginia until moving to Ruidoso, NM in 2012.

Mike enjoyed fishing but most of all he loved cars. Whether it was tinkering on one he was fixing up or watching them race on NASCAR on television. Mike also loved his country and was a very patriotic citizen.

Survivors include his daughter Tammy Wahlenmaier and her husband Ed of Weatherford TX, a sister, Carolyn Gibson, of Dallas, TX, and grandchildren Emily and Jake Wahlenmaier. He is also survived by niece and nephew Shannon Gibson and Shane Gibson and his wife Kim and four cousins.

The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 926, Roswell, NM 88202 or the charity of your choice.

PRUENEUobitRuth (Field) Pruneau, 89, died March 25 in Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, after a short illness. She was born Feb. 2, 1926 to Gladys Eudora (Cook) Field and Ralph Frary Field Sr. in Worcester MA. On November 28, 1946, she married Frederick Anthony Pruneau in Worcester MA. He died in 2011. Ruth leaves a daughter, Paulette (Polly) Pruneau, wife of Bob McKillop of Portland ME; a son, Thomas A. Pruneau of Berlin MA, and a niece, Linda Beeson of Roswell, her beloved caregiver in her final years.

She also leaves two grandchildren, Dana Bonin of Millbury MA and Serena Bonin of Worcester MA, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was predeceased by her daughter, Lorraine (Laurie) Bonin Carter. She also was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Adams, and Shirley Raczynski, and a brother, Ralph Field Jr.

She grew up in Worcester near Lake Quinsigamond where she learned to swim and dive. She often spoke fondly of summer outings as a child at her Aunt Fannie Field’s house in Leverett, MA. Erastus Salisbury Field, a 19th century artist from Leverett, and Eugene Field, a famous poet, were among her ancestors.

She graduated from Commerce HS in Worcester and attended Simmons College and Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, both in Boston, MA. She received her degree from Quinsigamond College, Worcester.

Ruth was a very intelligent woman with an enormous love of reading and listening to classical music. She worked in the Boylston Library, and brought her children to the library on a weekly basis. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was a life guard at the Greendale YMCA in Worcester.

Several years after Ruth and Fred married, they bought a home in Boylston, MA where Fred cultivated a large vegetable garden and Ruth cultivated flowers and herbs and put up vegetables, and jams and jellies. After their son, Tom, was born, they moved to West Boylston, MA and then to Albuquerque, NM. They moved to Roswell several years later.

Ruth and Fred traveled extensively, visiting all 48 contiguous states and Alaska. They also participated in Senior Olympics where Ruth’s early love of swimming came to the fore and she won 15 gold medals and five silver medals for her swimming, including a gold for the butterfly stroke.

She worked in the adult care program at the J.O.Y center and volunteered for the Literacy Volunteers. She was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church and sang with their choir.

A memorial service will be held April 12 at 2 p.m. at Aldersgate Methodist Church, 915 W. 19th St., Roswell.

Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home is handling her cremation. Memorial donations may be made to the J.O.Y. Center, 1822 N. Montana Ave., Roswell, NM 88201.

WILEYobitAlicia Wiley, 53, was called home to be with the Lord on March 20, 2015, in Phoenix, AZ. She was born on February 14, 1962 in Roswell, NM.

Celebrating 15 years together, she married Danny Wiley on October 20, 1999.

Alicia was a faithful servant to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and beloved sister. Alicia and her husband both served faithfully in their church. She loved her Pastor, David C. McNiel, and members of Greater New Bethel C.O.G.I.C. She will be missed dearly.

She worked for Levi Strauss in Roswell until the plant closed. Upon moving to Phoenix, Alicia went to work for Marriott, where she worked until she passed away.

Preceding her in death was her sister, Ida Marie Dixon; son, Tyrone Eugene; father, Lewis Dixon Jr.; grandparents: Ida Mae and Lewis Dixon Sr. and Lonzie and Luerenzie Singleton; and her great-grandparents, Angelo and Elizabeth Dupree.

Surviving Alicia are her husband, Danny Wiley of Phoenix, AZ; daughters, Shontay Coleman and Rosemary Coleman of Phoenix, AZ; a grandson, Zachary of Phoenix, AZ; granddaughters, Kendra and Kayla; a grandson, Tre Anthony, all of Lovington, NM; brothers: Eddie Eugene Singleton, of Albuquerque, NM; Lewis Dixon III and wife, Annette of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Pastor Rhueben Dixon Sr. and wife Debra of Roswell, NM; and a sister, Joyce Dixon of Albuquerque, NM. Also surviving her are numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 2-6 p.m. at Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 30, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at South Park Cemetery.

HATCHERobitRobert L. Hatcher, Jr., of Roswell, NM, died March 22, 2015. He was born September 29, 1992 in Albuquerque, NM, the son of Robert L. Hatcher and Gay Campbell. He attended Roswell schools and graduated from Roswell High School in 2011, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He was currently enrolled in Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell majoring in Engineering.

Robbie’s passions were building and racing the fastest cars and trucks, and women. He started racing go-carts at 3 ½ years old. He raced R/C cars and boats by 8 years old. He built his own Supercharged ¾ ton pickup to mud bog by age 9. He mowed lawns to afford his first Chrysler TC Maserati. When that wasn’t fast enough, he bought his ‘08 Pontiac G8 GT. Then, he decided to take the shop delivery truck and turn it into the World’s Fastest 4-door, 4WD street truck, known as the “Gray Ghost”. His builds include the Banana ZR1, the Frankenford, and many other builds. He worked long hours, late nights, and even weekends; but that never stopped him from lending a hand to a friend that needed help with their build or answering questions on forums.

Robert is survived by his father, Robert L. Hatcher of Roswell, and mother, Belinda Gay Campbell of San Antonio, TX; grandparents, Hilda Husted and Lloyd of Farmington, Anna Bell Hatcher of Roswell, and Duke Powell of Albuquerque; his aunt, Diane Colby of Farson, WY; and numerous cousins.

A celebration of life is being held at Spring River Park & Zoo on April 11, 2015 at 2 p.m. This celebration is open to all of Robbie’s family and friends who love him. Bring your hearts, cars, and lawn chairs. A meal will be served. This is an alcohol FREE event, out of respect for Robbie.

CARRILLOLorenzo Carrillo de 74 años falleció el 26 de marzo del 2015 en Roswell, Nuevo México. Nació el 5 de junio de 1940 en Del Rio Zacatecas, México. Sus padres fueron Tomás Carillo y Maria Elena Meza de Carrillo.

Trabajó como campesino en el campo agrícola. Fue miembro del templo, La Puerta Es Cristo en Midway. Lorenzo fue muy trabajador y siempre fue proveedor para su familia. Siempre fue atento con su esposa y su familia.

Personas que le precidieron en la muerte, son sus padres y su esposa Ofelia Solares de Carrillo. Le sobreviven su hermana Maria Elena Meza de Carrillo; sobrinos Martin Lerma, y Martin Carrillo Lerma, todos de México. Cuñada Cecilia y su esposo Benjamin Lara. Sobrinos y sobrinas, Luis y Veronica Lara, Dalia y Jose Salazar, Susana y Richard Byrd. Cuñado Venancio Solares y sobrinos Adan y Aaron Solares. También le sobreviven sus hermanos en cristo.

Dr. William George Liakos Sr.

liakosobitDr. William George Liakos, Sr., 80, a longtime Roswell pediatrician and community leader, died on March 23, 2015, following a courageous battle with a rare heart disease.

Dr. Liakos founded BCA Medical Associates in the early 1970s and was honored to serve thousands of Roswell children and their families.  One of his greatest joys was taking care of the children and grandchildren of his original patients.

Born in Bayard, Nebraska, on April 25, 1934, Liakos grew up on a farm with his large family.  He received a congressional appointment to attend West Point, graduating in 1957.  He married Kay Hendricks on July 26, 1958, at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Deciding that he would dedicate his life to serving others through medicine, he graduated from Duke Medical School. He completed his internship at William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas and his residency in pediatrics at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.

Dr. Liakos and his family moved to Roswell in 1968 to establish his medical practice and to spend time managing and enjoying their beloved cattle and sheep ranch, the 9H6 ranch, near Capitan.

An active community leader, Dr. Liakos served in local and state leadership roles.  He was president of the New Mexico Medical Society from 1983-84 and was Alternate Delegate to the American Medical Association in Chicago from 1988-90. He received the Community Service Award from the NM Medical Society in 2008. Dr. Liakos was a founding board member of the Roswell Assurance Home and helped establish the Leadership Roswell program. He served on the vestry of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and the board of directors of the Roswell Museum and Art Center and Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, among others.

Dr. Liakos is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kay Hendricks Liakos, his daughter Kee Liakos (John Phillips) and grandchildren Charlotte and Liam Kurz and Robinson Phillips (Alison), all of Denver; Liz Phillips of Los Angeles and Kaitlin Phillips of New York City.  He is survived by his son, Dr. William Liakos,  Jr. (Cymantha) and grandsons Will, Elias, Gus and John Owen Liakos, all of Roswell.  He is also survived by his sister Angeline Liakos of San Diego and brother John Liakos (Liz) of Omaha and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved canine companion, Espi. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Victoria Liakos, his brothers Leo, Tom and Gus Liakos and his sister, Ann Liakos Duthie.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 505 N. Pennsylvania Ave.  A reception will follow at the Roswell Museum and Art Center.  Memorials honoring his lifetime of compassion and service to the community may be made to the Working Mothers’ Day Nursery, the Roswell Assurance Home, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern New Mexico.

GRAVESobitKent was born April 7, 1944, in Carlsbad, NM and died April 1, 2015 at home in Elida, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Kent is survived by his wife Terri Zielinski Graves, his daughter, Jennifer Reinhart of Roswell and his son Patrick Graves of Albuquerque. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Annalise and Benjamin.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Kent graduated from ENMU with a degree in journalism. He was a municipal judge in Elida prior to his retirement.

There will be no funeral services as per family request. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Kent’s name to the Elida Volunteer Fire Dept., PO Box 208, Elida, NM 88116.
